Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)
Students at LCA will be introduced to a variety of healthy fresh fruit and vegetables in school as a result of
this FFVP grant (https://www.fns.usda.gov/ffvp/fresh-fruit-and-vegetable-program). Samples will be placed
throughout the school and small samples will be passed out to students. Weekly menus will include “Fun
Facts” explaining what the food is, where it is from, and health benefits of eating it.
This will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Idaho produces 1/3 of the nation’s potato – about 13 billion pounds.
China consumes the most potatoes – 25.6%
Potatoes are gluten-free & are a good source of fiber & potassium.
The Inca Indians in Peru were the first to cultivate potatoes around 8,000 BC to 5,000 BC.
Potatoes are 80% water & a 8oz potato has 100 calories. The average American eats 124 lbs. per year. Germans eat twice as much.
In 1995 it was the first vegetable to be grown in space.
