Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)
Students at LCA will be introduced to a variety of healthy fresh fruit and vegetables in school as a result of
this FFVP grant (https://www.fns.usda.gov/ffvp/fresh-fruit-and-vegetable-program). Samples will be placed
throughout the school and small samples will be passed out to students. Weekly menus will include “Fun
Facts” explaining what the food is, where it is from, and health benefits of eating it.
This will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Raspberries

Raspberries are a fruit that comes from the Rubus genus of plants in the rose family.

They contain strong antioxidants – Vitamin C, quercetin & gallic acid that fight against cancer, heart & circulatory disease & age- related decline.

Originally from Turkey.

Russia produces the greatest amount in the world.

Each plant can produce a few hundred per season.

Friday

Radishes

High in potassium, vitamin C, & fiber. They can lower blood pressure and help in digestion.

They are a flowering plant and are in the mustard family.

They grow underground like carrots and all parts (bulb, seeds & leaf tops) are edible. The most nutritious part of the plant is the leaves

They are biennials – its life cycle is two years long.

Due to the uncertainty of food deliveries and shortages by manufacturers, LCA’s menu will be posted on the website by Sunday.
